<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Today we traveled to Oxford, where we learned about how Alice and Wonderland first started. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Christ Church was originally founded by Cardinal Wolsey as Cardinal's College in 1524. The college buildings took over the site of St. Frideswide's Monastery, which was suppressed by Wolsey to fund his college. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">In 1851, Charles Dodgson came to Christ Church to study mathematics. He spent the rest of his life here as a student and teacher. It was while he wrote for a student paper that he was given the writing name - "Lewis Carroll," by his editor.</span></span></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkDVy-Qhs_9HKCfN182emJLa46JF5SqLJNYqxyls6ghyphenhyphenSrRENas01fCchZ9PeIE4GRvRvk0CPpyCj_P8v2h5O5JULufmxZRz3C0zHils_CK3rW1_mHYOBxJEokz8m8-3NdSO29fySGUVZ2/s1600/IMG_5644.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><span style="color: black;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkDVy-Qhs_9HKCfN182emJLa46JF5SqLJNYqxyls6ghyphenhyphenSrRENas01fCchZ9PeIE4GRvRvk0CPpyCj_P8v2h5O5JULufmxZRz3C0zHils_CK3rW1_mHYOBxJEokz8m8-3NdSO29fySGUVZ2/s200/IMG_5644.JPG" width="150" /></span></a><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px; text-align: justify;">It was at Christ Church that Dodgson first met the children of the then Dean: Harry, Alice, Lorina and Edith. Little did he know, the story of </span><i style="line-height: 16px; text-align: justify;">Alice in Wonderland</i><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px; text-align: justify;"> was starting to form. He had asked permission to photograph the Cathedral from the Deanery garden. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 16px; text-align: justify;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.719999313354492px; text-align: start;">This garden is hidden from view today as it always has been, a long wall dividing it again from the cathedral and its garden. It was a wooden door in this wall which tantalised Alice as a young girl, because it was kept locked and she was told it was out of bounds. </span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.719999313354492px;">The whole story of Alice is based on her attempts to get into just such a secret garden.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;"><span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">The door in Deanery Garden is the green door that later became the White Rabbit's door. </span></span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 25.920000076293945px;">Behind it was a large</span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 20.719999313354492px;"> horse chestnut tree with a great horizontal bough, which still stands in the Deanery Garden, is reputedly the one in which the Cheshire Cat sat, just as Alice’s own cat, Dinah, did. This tree also </span></span><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 25.920000076293945px; text-align: start;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">served as the inspiration for the Cheshire Cat’s favorite place to flash its signature smile.</span></span><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 25.920000076293945px;">There is also a stained glass window inside the Cathedral that served as the model for the treacle well in Alice in Wonderland. </span></span><span style="background-color: white; text-align: justify;"><span style="line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">While in the process of setting up his cumbersome equipment Charles was approached by Alice and her two sisters who wanted to be photographed. </span></span></span></div>

Today we had tea time with Professor Wolfe at The Cavendish London. We enjoyed a variety of flavors of teas ranging from green tea, lemon grass and ginger, vanilla black, and black currant. Finger foods were also served during this time.<br />
<br />
These foods varied from finger sandwiches to scones and cookies. Although not everyone in the group was fond of the tea, overall everyone enjoyed the experience of having a typical tea time meal in London. </div>

The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing. There are four main features: the Sacred Spring, the Roman temple, the Roman Bath House, and the Museum holding artifacts from the bath.<br />

Thermo-mineral baths, like these at Aquae Sulis, were not like ordinary bath houses. They were fed by natural hot springs, which were considered to be sacred places, protected by a god or goddess. People came long distances to bathe in their special waters, often seeking a cure for an ailment. They would pray to the guardian deity for help and might make an offering at the temple before bathing in the waters.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Two traditions came together to create the Roman style of bathing. The ancient Greeks had public baths which contained individual baths in rooms heated by charcoal braziers and in their excursus halls there were facilities for cold water showers. The merging of these traditions in the 2nd century BC created an aesthetic and leisurely approach to bathing which was not simply a means of getting clean but also an end itself.</div>

As stated before, hot springs such as the Aquae Sulis is protected by god and goddesses. Specifically, the statues are Roman governors of the province of Britannia, and Roman emperors with particular connections to Britain. The figures surrounding the bath are Julius Caesar, Emperor Claudius, Emperor Vespasian, Governor Ostorius Scapula, Governor Suetonius Paulinus, Governor Julius Agricola, Head of Roma, Emperor Hadrian, and Constantine the Great.<br />

The month of May has many traditions and celebrations. Many of the May Day celebrations take place at the weekend as well as on the "May Day Monday." The weekend is known as Bank Holiday weekend because it comes with the extra day off on Monday.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1138975149560950793.post-79450026305508042482015-05-03T12:17:00.002-07:002015-05-03T12:19:58.312-07:00#SundayInScotland<div style="text-align: center;">
Today in Edinburgh, the group had a portion of the day to ourselves. A few of us decided to visit a historic figure famous to the area, a small dog name Bobby with a big heart.</div>

Unable to find work as a gardener he avoided the workhouse by joining the Edinburgh Police Force as a night watchman. </span></div>
<div style="font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px; padding-bottom: 15px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To keep him company through the long winter nights John took on a partner, a diminutive Skye Terrier, his ‘watchdog’ called Bobby. Together John and Bobby became a familiar sight trudging through the old cobbled streets of Edinburgh.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">John eventually died of disease on the 15th February 1858 and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. Bobby soon touched the hearts of the local residents when he refused to leave his master's grave, even in the worst weather conditions.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Bobby’s fame spread throughout Edinburgh. It is reported that almost on a daily basis the crowds would gather at the entrance of the Kirkyard waiting for the one o'clock gun that would signal the appearance of Bobby leaving the grave for his midday meal.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 13px; line-height: 16px;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The kind folk of Edinburgh took good care of Bobby, but still he remained loyal to his master. Today we made our adventure from Dublin to Edinburgh! We started off our morning at the Dublin Port Co. and took a ferry to Wales. Once in Wales, we took 4 trains to get to our final destination, Edinburgh. Although it was a long day, we are finally here and can't wait to explore and see what this city has to offer! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Joe, our tour guide for the day, took us around the Wicklow Mountains of Ireland. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Along the journey, Joe told us the Irish folklore of the Banshee, or the "woman of the barrows". As legend has it, she is an omen of death and makes an appearance around the time of death. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Joe also told us about the "Bog Bodies" that were found around 25 years ago and were nearly 2,500 years old. After further investigation the two bodies were young males with identical axe marks in the back of the skull. These were a few stories he told along the way...</div>

Not only did he tell us historical facts about the mountains and different sites along the way, he also provided a great source of entertainment. In the video below you can see the Irish bogland, once used in place of wood as the only naturally available source of kindling. </div>

Molly Malone is a popular song, set in Dublin, telling the fictional tale of a fishmonger who plied her trade on the city streets. In the late 20th century, a legend grew that there was a historical Molly, who lived during the 17th century. This is where the song received the title "Molly Malone," the unofficial anthem of Dublin. </div>

Today we visited Trinity College. We were able to view a little bit of the campus along with the tour of The Book of Kells. #TransformationTuesday is showing what the campus looked like in the 1900's and what it looks like today. As you can see in the first picture, there were horses and buggies, where as today people drive cars. This shows you how much has changed in just a short period of time! </div>
