UK Bank Holiday

British bank holidays are public holidays and have been recognized since 1871. The name "Bank Holiday" comes from the time when banks were shut and so no trading could take place. There is currently a total of eight permanent bank and public holidays in England, Wales, and Scotland and ten in Northern Ireland.
Today, as a national holiday, the streets of Edinburgh were packed with people.
The month of May has many traditions and celebrations. Many of the May Day celebrations take place at the weekend as well as on the "May Day Monday." The weekend is known as Bank Holiday weekend because it comes with the extra day off on Monday.
